How to install Windows 7 VGA driver on Dell GX260

This is a short guide on solving the problem when trying to install the VGA driver on a Dell GX260 when Windows 7 is installed.

Step #1

Install Windows 7 on the Dell GX260 computer. (Refer to my other articles for using ImageX and WinPE 3.0 boot environment for capturing and applying images).

Step #2

Once you have Windows 7 installed, at least for me, Windows Updates didn’t pick up the VGA driver automatically; leaving you with a very large resolution which is unusable.

Step #3

Download the Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller driver (R126990.EXE). (Download Here) The drivers on Dell’s website do not work for Windows Vista or Windows 7.

GX260 - R126990 driver

GX260 - R126990 driver

Step #4

Once you have the R126990.EXE downloaded, you will need to extract the contents of the EXE to a folder. I suggest using 7-zip or Winrar. Download 7-Zip

GX260 - Extracting the driver.

GX260 - Extracting the driver.

Step #5

Now that you have the driver extracted you are going to have to install the driver manually in compatibility mode. Go into the folder you just extracted and right click on the setup.exe and go to properties and then the compatibility mode tab. You will want to enable compatibility mode for Windows Service Pack 3 and also select “Run as Administrator.”

Run in Compatibility Mode

Run in Compatibility Mode

Step #6

Click Apply, then click OK. Now run the setup.exe as you normally would and it shouldn’t complain about OS not being compatible.

  1. Hi…
Thank you so much for sharing such a nice information. That would solve all the problems for installing windows 7 on Dell-gx260. Good work! Keep it up.

  2. Your very welcome. Just sharing the information that I wish knew beforehand. Check out the rest of my articles and let me know what you think.

  3. Nathan says:

    DOES NOT WORK!

  4. I think there are a couple different revisions of the GX260, which means they could have put out some batches with different motherboards and possibly different graphics controllers. I will try and see if I can find out which revision the ones I tested this on were. I used this driver on around 35 GX260′s; all with Windows 7 and worked just fine.

  5. Jon Johnsen says:

As Nathan said, this does not work.

  6. Sorry about that Nathan and Jon. I have updated steps #5 and #6 with the correct procedure. It does work, I just did this on 4 GX260′s yesterday. Updates them to normal resolution of 1280 x 1024. If you have any other questions just let me know. Have a nice day.

  7. GerhardStefan says:

    Thanks! This works!

  9. Hey Bro,

Nice site. Some useful and informative posts man :) I know, I am creeping, lol. I hope can produce something like this myself one day. Who did you get your templates from?

Hopefully one of you people could help me out somewhat here. I am looking for someone who I was reliably informed told was a member here. They used to use the tag ‘tafffslaffs’.

Because I am looking to start my own site on cosmetics type content for products such as: opalescence teeth whitening (hence the where did you get your templates from, lol) but am having realllll difficulty getting hold of dropshippers for these goods. I had been in touch with this guy but my PC got stolen and unfortunately had all my contact details on it (I know, I know, should have backed it up :( )

So if you guys have heard or seen anything of this guy could you pm me please? Failing that maybe one of you folks knows someone?

Also, which hosting do you use as I keep being told not so good things about the host I am thinking of placing my site with. Plus any other helpful tips you can give re starting up my website would be most helpful and much appreciated.

I do hope that one of you has helpful knowledge on this

    Thanks Pal,

  10. @ DudedScoggins: I don’t use templates. Everything I work on is designed from scratch. I use http://www.MediaTemple.net hosting. It is the best out there. You pay a little more but it is definitely worth it. I have been with them for two years and not a single instance of downtime. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Have a nice evening.

Many thanks, followed your instruction and I now have windows 7 running at 1024 x 768 32bit.

    Regards

  12. @ Alan : You are very welcome. I wish there had been a tutorial out when I first tried this. I literally spent 2-3 hours trying different drivers, looking up motherboard info… etc. I hope this little tutorial helps save people time :) Have a great evening!

  16. Adil says:

when i right click and go in the properties.. its not givng me any compatibility mode tab.
NOTE.. I have installed windows 7 and i want to run the aero theme.. right now its runing with old dull blue theme…

  17. Adil says:

k its there.. the compatibility tab.. but damm i want to run aero theme…

  18. @Adil : I don’t know if GX260 is capable of running Aero theme with integrated graphics. The lowest model I have seen run Aero with onboard is GX280.

  19. Rj says:

Hey Brian hope you can help, I’ve just read the support and advice you have given regarding screen resolution using win 7 on a GX260.
Do you know if the same method will work on a SX260? (I hope so).
I have recently installed win 7 with high expectations, only to discover that I’m unable to modify/change the RES.
It does not give me any reasonable options apart from 640 x 480 (if you can call that reasonable) I’m also running it through an HDTV.
I was able to adjust the settings (eventually) when using VISTA but I am totally stumped with this OS.

Hope you can advise and keep up the good work….

(I’d be lost if it weren’t for people like you)

  20. @ RJ : Sorry I don’t have any way to test a SX260. What you will want to do is find out what Graphics Controller driver your motherboard has and then try going to either Dell or Intel and downloading the graphics controller driver. This is different than simply downloading the VGA driver from Dell for that model. You want to find the base graphics controller driver. Let me know how it goes! :) Good luck.

  21. Bjarni says:

Works great, thx alot for sharing this information, great work :)

  22. Cooper says:

Thank you very much worked great!!

  23. @Bjarni : You’re welcome! Also note, this procedure has to be done for the GX270′s with Windows 7 as well.

  24. Samir says:

    Hi Brain,

I just followed your tutorial to the T, and I get an error message: This system does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,
    Samir

  25. Samir says:

    Hey Brain,

I was mistaken! I was trying to install the driver you suggest on a PCI NVIDIA card. Totally slipped my mind that I had install the card to obtain better resolution. Thank you for the tutorial on how to use XP Mode, as I need that information to install the legacy driver for my card!

    Regards,
    Samir

  26. Duke says:

    Dude,

  28. Frustrated says:
